August in Monterey has become, arguably, the premier vintage automotive event in the U.S., it includes not only vintage races at Laguna Seca, but also the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance along with a number of other Concours, rallys, and some of the best auto auctions.
Over the week of August 12th, some the worlds rarest and most beautiful cars will cross the auction block of the most protégés auction companies. Below are a number of auction compnies and some of the cars they have available. What car will bring the most money? What car would you like to own?
The Gooding and Company Pebble Beach Auction 2013 will be held Saturday, August 17th and Sunday, August, 18th at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center in Pebble Beach, California. Gooding’s 10th annual auction will feature approximately 160 cars, including 35 estimated to reach bids in excess of $1,000,000.
This year The Gooding and Company has several major offerings, highlighted by a 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante; 1948 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Competizione; 1964 Shelby 289 Cobra Competition Roadster; 1955 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione; 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France 14-Louver Berlinetta; 1966 AAR Gurney-Weslake Eagle Mk 1; 1929 Bentley Speed Six Grafton Coupe; 1997 McLaren F1; 1959 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coupe Speciale; 1967 Ferrari 365 California Spider; 1925 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix and 1956 Maserati 150S; among others. Gooding will also have a number of important Porsches that will be auctiond off... Starting with the 1964 904 Carrera GTS; 1956 356 A 1500 GS Carrera Coupe; 1956 Porsche 356 1500 GS Carrera Speedster; 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR; 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS; 1996 Porsche 993 GT2 and the 1972 Porsche 911 “STR II”, a bespoke creation from Porsche arch-enthusiast Magnus Walker.
The Russo and Steele Monterey Auction will be held August 15-17 nearby Fisherman’s Wharf on the waterfront in downtown Monterey, California. The 13th annual Russo and Steele Monterey sale will see more than 200 cars cross the block in Russo’s ‘Auction in the Round’ format.
This year the 2013 Russo and Steele Monterey sale include a 1962 Shelby Cobra Independent Competition Roadster; 1981 Jaguar XJR-4 Trans Am; 1949 Ferrari 166 Inter Berlinetta; 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Spider Conversion; 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster; among others.
The RM Auctions Monterey auction will be held August 16th and 17th at the Portola Hotel and Monterey Convention Center in Monterey, California. RM’s 28th annual flagship two-day Monterey sale will feature 120 vehicles, with 25 cars estimated to sell in excess of $1 million and five estimated to bring more than $4 million.
Headlining the RM Auctions auctions include the 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider by Pinin Farina; 1955 Jaguar D-Type; one-owner 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider; semi-works Team Camoradi 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage; 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT; 1953 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spider; bespoke 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster; Pebble Beach Best of Show-winning 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster; 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider; 1958 Lister-Jaguar Knobbly Prototype and the 1931 Duesenberg Model SJ Disappearing Top Convertible Coupe by Murphy; among others. RM will also have a number of important Ferraris that will be auctiond off... Starting with a series of eight Ferraris from the Estate of the late William H. Tilley, a Beverly Hills-based collector and Ferrari aficionado. All offered without reserve, the group is highlighted by a Ferrari Classiche-certified 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I by Pinin Farina, chassis 0418MD. One of 22 examples built, it competed in the Mille Miglia before being sold by the factory and remained competitive throughout the following decades both in North American and European events. The Tilley Collection, which spans more than 55 years of Ferrari production, also features a 1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta, a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4, a 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS, a 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, a 1990 Ferrari F40, a 2002 Ferrari 360 Spider F1 and a 2010 Ferrari California.
The Mecum Monterey Auctions will be held August 15-17 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa in Monterey, California. A strong and diverse selection of more than 700 vehicles are expected to cross the auction block during the three-day event.
This years Mecum Monterey auction will be headlined by a 1955 Porsche 550/1500 RS Spyder; 1954 Ferrari 750 Monza; 1964 Shelby 289 Independent Competition Cobra; 1984 Lotus Type 95T John Player Special; 1990 Ferrari F40; 1938 Delage D8-120 Aerosport Coupe; 1982 Jaguar XJR-5 GTP; 1985 March Buick 85G GTP; 1909 Locomobile Model 40 Type I Demi Tonneau; among others. Mecum’s line-up includes a diverse selection of Porsche models, with three of the machines coming from the Peter and Cheryl Dunkel Collection including their 550 Spyder. Chassis number 550-0077 was actively campaigned by European driver Goethals, winning the 1500CC class at the GP des Frontiers in Chimay and the Coupe de Salon in Montlhéry among numerous strong overall showings. The Dunkel Collection also includes a race-ready 1958 356A Speedster Race Car, a matching-numbers 1963 356B Carrera 2 Coupe, a 1954 Porsche Allgaier A133 Diesel tractor and 1954 International Harvester R140 Woody, among others.
The Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction will be held Friday, August 16th on the grounds of the Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley, California. Held in connection with The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering, the 16th annual Bonhams sale held during Monterey Classic Car Week will feature approximately 90 vehicles.
Headline consignments at the Bonhams Quail auction will include a 1931 Bentley 4.5-Liter Supercharged Le Mans; 1924 Bugatti Type 35 Prototype; 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster; 1972 Lancia Stratos Stradale; 1970 Porsche 911 S/T; 1958 Lister-Chevrolet Knobbly; 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale Coupe; 1963 Shelby AC Cobra; 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America; 1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 Periscopica and 1952 Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica Mk2; among others.
